Creative Mornings Toronto: Ink

Posted on January 27, 2016

Continuing my look back at 2015’s Creative Mornings Toronto talks, March’s brought us back to the gorgeous Shopify Toronto office and featured worldly illustrator Jacqui Oakley on the theme of Ink. Jacqui navigated us through her illustration career and how embracing the fear {and ink!} helped her get where she is today.

Creative Mornings Toronto: Climate

Posted on January 15, 2016

At some point in 2015, I decided that I would in fact blog each and every Creative Mornings Toronto event that I shot {which was all 12 last year!}, because they are wonderful events that make me feel at home and happy and I want more people to experience them. And inevitably in 2015, I got too busy and then forgot. Alas.

I also seem to be weird about needing to post them chronologically, so I’m not going to fight it.

Without further ado, here are my photos from last February’s delightful talk on the theme of Climate with ROM Kids Assistant Coordinator; Kiron Mukherjee!

Kiron’s talk was a great reminder to always look further and observe your own climates to see what you can learn from them {and we’re not talking physical weather here}. On the plus, he brought in priceless artifacts from the ROM and everyone got to touch 100 million year old dinosaur poop and, even cooler, a meteorite. From space. OUTER SPACE. Kiron brought out the kid in everyone. ❤

Creative Mornings Toronto: Ugly

Posted on February 11, 2015

Ugly was the theme of January’s Creative Mornings talk with Steven Artimew and it took place in one of the prettiest venues yet! If you haven’t seen Shopify‘s Toronto office, you need to check it out. It has a cat wall, Mordor jokes, cozy hangout sections, their own bar, and so much beautiful natural light! It’s kind of a dream.

The speaker is a cofounding member of Parkdale Roadrunners, so a challenge was put forth to the attendees to run to the talk. Those who participated in the challenge received a beautiful laser cut wood medal provided by Hot Pop Factory. I have a hard enough time walking in the snow and slush this time of year, so I decided I probably shouldn’t risk trying to run in it. Disaster alert!

The amazing, free breakfast spread looked extra tasty in Shopify’s office kitchen this time around. I particularly enjoyed how much fun people seemed to be having with the bagel slicer.

I don’t believe the video of this particular talk has been uploaded to Toronto chapter’s website yet, but there are lots of other great talks available to watch for free.

Katie Dutemple: Live at Poetry Jazz Cafe 01.31.15

Posted on February 10, 2015

I feel very lucky to have so many talented, driven, and inspiring lady friends in my life. We may all have different passions, but we always show up to support one another!

A couple weekends ago we said goodbye to January with an amazing and intimate show with Katie Dutemple guest vocal-ing with Re.verse at the Poetry Jazz Cafe in Kensington. Poetry is an awesome little venue that’s dark and cozy with lots of details, perfect for this soulful evening of songs. {Plus, they have Thomas Lavers Ginger Beer, which is my new love!}

Unfortunately, I don’t have the world’s best camera for super low light situations like these, but it was fun hopping around trying to see what I could capture with what I’ve got!

Creative Mornings Toronto: Colour

Posted on January 26, 2015

Creative Mornings is one of my favourite free events. It’s a monthly breakfast speaker series geared towards creatives and takes place in over 100 cities around the world. It’s also run entirely by volunteers, which makes it a very special event to attend. Everyone involved is so passionate and it really inspires a sense of community among creatives {and let’s get serious, a lot of us go to work in our pajamas, so it’s great to get dressed, get out, and surround ourselves with awesome people}.

I volunteer whenever I can to photograph the events. I don’t like sitting still for too long anyways, so this way I get to attend the talks while wandering around with my face behind the camera.

The first talk I photographed was the Toronto chapter’s September 2014 talk on the theme of Colour. The speaker was Tiffany Pratt; a glitter bomb full of rainbows and sprinkles and ribbons and joy and enthusiasm for life. Seriously, she’s that lovely. She hugged everyone who spoke with her following the talk. She’s an inspiration just to be around. {Tiffany, if you’re reading this, please adopt me!}

This has probably been my favourite speaker event that I’ve ever been to. It was held at the 918 Bathurst centre and the lovely team of volunteers decorated the entire great hall with so many colourful streamers. Each attendee also got a handmade bracelet from Tiffany. So cute!

I highly recommend watching the whole talk {available here}. You’ll find it particularly uplifting if you have multipotentialite tendencies. BE ALL THE THINGS!

RMG Exposed 2014

Posted on December 12, 2014

A few weeks ago, I had the honour of being selected to participate in The Robert McLaughlin Gallery‘s annual RMG Exposed Photography Auction and Fundraiser show. I donated a 13×19 print of my Audrey Moment photo, which I was very pleasantly surprised to find out had also won the Best Conceptual / Non-Representation prize sponsored by Waddington’s! My piece was also featured in the live auction portion of the show, which was a fun new experience for me. I didn’t catch who ended up winning the auction, but I hope my Audrey is off to a good home!

The RMG always puts on a fun and elegant event, making it a little different each year. Unfortunately I got too wrapped up in looking at the art exhibits and taking photos of everything to really enjoy the {delicious, I’m sure} food and the fun little photobooth they had set up.

I didn’t plan it, but I ended up wearing my hair in the same style I had in my photo, so a lot of people recognized me throughout the evening. It was sort of a funny icebreaker and as a result I ended up chatting with a lot more people than I normally would. Being that I don’t know many people from the Oshawa gallery circle, it was a nice change!

Thank you so much to the RMG staff, the jury, my fellow featured artists, and all of the wonderful sponsors for making yet another great, successful event! Always a pleasure to participate. 🙂

RMG Exposed 2013

Posted on November 16, 2013

Last Saturday {November 9, 2013} was the Robert McLaughlin Gallery’s annual photography auction event; RMG Exposed. I submitted my photo from my apartment series; Date, and it was accepted into the show, so I printed it out at a nice 13ʺx19ʺ to donate to their silent auction that raises funds for their community arts programming.

It was a really nice event. There was a craft beer tasting bar set up by the lovely Melissa Bies {check out her blog}, which I thought was fantastic, and the food was so good. Any excuse for a poutine station is a win in my books. And just you wait until you see the world’s tiniest army of crème brûlée. Delicious, delicious army.

Anyways, as per usual I brought my camera along and documented the night away.

There was a lot of great Canadian content in the photos at this event, which is always nice to celebrate. My favourite Canadian content of the evening though would have to be when I ate poutine in front of a Group of Seven painting. I don’t know if that would have ever been on my bucket list, but the RMG made it possible, so I’m just going to go ahead and cross that off.

Thanks RMG.
